…Get happy when Adar comes?
Great question! Because on a simple level, it’s easy to understand. Purim is such a fun Yom Tov that the whole month is happy. But of course it’s much deeper than that, so I’m happy you asked! The Nesivos Shalom explains that the theme of the Megillah and the whole Yom Tov of Purim is bitachon. What “causes” all the problems in the Megillah? It’s Mordechai. He refuses to ever bow to Haman – BOOOOOOOO! (Ah, I see you’re already in the zone! Gevaldig!). How could he put Klal Yisrael into danger though? Because he had rock solid bitachon that no one could ever destroy Klal Yisrael. He says to Esther before she goes to Achashveirosh, “Revach vihatzalah yaamod laYehudim mimakom acher” – if you don’t go, Hashem will save us a different way, but – without a doubt – He will save us!
This, says the Tzaddik, is the simchah of Adar! The mitzvah of Megillah starts on the 11th of Adar (see Megillah 1:1). The first ten days are like the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah (because Yom Hakippurim is like Purim)… so this simchah extends all the way to Rosh Chodesh and through the whole month! Someone who has bitachon and is samaeach b’chelko – who works to appreciate what Hashem gives him… is the only person who is truly happy!
