Torah Behind the Tune

Torah Behind The Tune January 25, 2025

This song is rooted in the creation of Adam – the epic and foundational moment when Hashem Himself breathed life into the first human being. As the Torah describes, “וַיִּפַּח בְּאַפָּיו נִשְׁמַת חַיִּים” – He breathed into his nostrils the soul of life. This act was more than just a transfer of air; it was an infusion of Divinity. The holy Zohar teaches, “מאן דנפח, מתוכיה נפח” – one who breathes, breathes from their innermost essence. When Hashem breathed into Adam, He gave a part of Himself, His very essence, to humanity.

In that moment, Hashem gifted each of us a חֵלֶק אֱלוֹקָּה מִמַּעַל מַמָּשׁ – a piece of His very essence, as the Alter Rebbe so beautifully explains in the Tanya. This divine gift is the foundation of our נִשְׁמַת יִשְׂרָאֵל, the Jewish soul. It is this soul that forms an unbreakable bond with Hashem, a connection so deep and unshakable that no force in the world can sever it. Our soul is the spark of Hashem within us, constantly connecting us to Him, no matter where we are or what we are going through.

There’s a profound connection between הַנְּשָׁמָה (the soul) and נְשִׁימָה (breath). Both words share the same root in Hebrew, reminding us that every breath we take is a continuation of that first, holy breath of creation. Each inhale and exhale is a physical and spiritual act, an opportunity to reconnect to the divine spark within us. This idea is captured in the words of Rebbe Levi in the name of Rebbe Chanina, as taught in Bereishis Rabah: “עַל כָּל נְשִׁימָה וּנְשִׁימָה תְּהַלֵּל קה” – for every single breath, we must praise Hashem. Every breath is a miracle, a moment to reflect on the endless love and vitality that Hashem continuously places into our lives.

This song is an invitation to pause. Life moves quickly, and it’s so easy to take our breath for granted. But when we stop and breathe deeply, we can feel the חִיּוּת – the life and vitality Hashem placed within us. Each breath is a chance to reconnect to Him, to remind ourselves that we are filled with His light and love. This is the essence of the נְּשָׁמָה, which burns brightly within each of us, like a candle in the dark, always yearning to return to its source.

Chevra, take a moment. Breathe deeply. With every breath, feel Hashem’s infinite love filling you, surrounding you, and lifting you higher. Let your נְּשָׁמָה shine brightly, illuminating the world with its divine spark. This song is a reminder that Hashem is as close to you as your next breath, and with every breath, you can feel His Presence, His love, and His infinite light. Let the music carry this truth into your heart and let your soul sing it out to the world.
