Nothing is wrong with you for getting so distracted when you’re trying to daven! In fact, nobody works harder than the yetzer hara trying to distract you from a good moment of talking to Hashem. But there is an approach available to beat the yetzer hara by using his own techniques as fuel to turbocharge your whole davening.
“Karov Hashem l’chol karahu, l’chol asher yikrauhu be’emes”’ — Hashem is close to all those who call out to Him in truth. What does it mean to talk to Hashem in “truth”? Your distracting thoughts are your ‘truths’ right now, because in this moment, this is what’s coming up for you. They’re on your mind because they matter to you, and this is what you’re dealing with right now. You may want to be talking to Hashem about lofty matters, but you are getting stuck on the little things that you need help with in your life. Start by noticing your distracting thoughts, accepting them, and then channeling them upwards to Hashem, asking Him to help you with these matters.
If you do that, you can literally fuel your prayers with the yetzer hara’s own techniques! Think about that. You get these distracting thoughts in order to knock you off course, but now you’re taking them and sending them up as requests to Hashem, helping you deal with all the things on your mind. Your prayers get boosted, and you get to stay super present in your prayer experience.
The big and small things on your heart, they can all get channeled towards He Who is in charge of it all — Hashem, and all of you can be absorbed in the tefillah experience — at every level.
