Did You Know? Shavuos

The passuk says “Vayar ha’am vayanu’u — and the nation saw and shook.” The Baal HaTurim says that this is a remez that the Yidden shuckled during Matan Torah, and this tells us that when we learn Torah, we should shuckle! The Machzor Vitri adds that not only did the Yidden shuckle, but the trees and mountains did too!

The Rokeach says that the AseresHaDibros were related in a special niggun, the same niggun the neviim
would use when they said over what Hashem had told them!

The Pirkei D’Rebbi Eliezer says that the whole Matan Torah took all of three hours. The Radal says that this can be explained in two ways: either because it was Erev Shabbos [according to the Pirkei D’Rebbi Eliezer], and Hashem wanted to leave time to prepare for Shabbos, or because at Matan Torah they were given the mitzvah of davening [according to some opinions] and so they had to daven Mincha!

The Medrash says that when Moshe Rabeinu got the Torah, he made Birchas HaTorah, but he said a slightly different version of the bracha. This is what it was: אשר‭ ‬בחר‭ ‬בתורה‭ ‬הזאת‭ ‬וקדשה‭ ‬ורצה‭ ‬בעושיה, Who chose this Torah, sanctified it, and desired those who fulfill it. We don’t follow this custom, but the Machzor Vitri says that when one has an aliyah on Shavuos, he should make this bracha!
